Windows Vista has a large amount of options when it comes to customization, as do nearly all Windows operating systems. Fortunately, Vista makes it even easier then you may believe to tweak your operating sys

At this point you're probably either thinking, "what command where?" or "that has a function?" Hopefully we'll answer both of those in that order for you. First, right-click on any file or folder. Notice that the "contextual" menu, that is, the menu that drops down from your cursor, has several options on it. The one we're interested in is "Send To." Once you run your mouse over the 'Send To' command, it drops down with a list of locati

One of the most ridiculous features of Vista are the continuous "confirmation" messages. Messages that pop up nearly every time you attempt to run any unknown application. Almost all of which are completely unnecessary, and waste time. Here is how you can disable these annoying uac notifications, quickly and eas

Nearly every single file on your computer contains some type of personal information - either information about the user, information on setting e.g. time, date, etc. In any case, it may be good to remove some of this information before making it available to the public, such as uploading a video or image onl

(3) Spybot - Search & Destroy [Broken URL Removed] - Yet another spy/ad/craplet removal tool. Also lets you clean-up program and web-usage tracks, and even fix spyware-caused Registry inconsistencies. I have been using it for more then a year now and love it. (Nr. of downloads last week: 184,

Vista is riddled with an extremely large amount of "security" measures that may, or may not, be helpful. Running Vista as an Administrator may help, but did you know there is an even higher Administrator? Well, there is! All you need to do to unlock it is the follow

(2) Auslogics Disk Defrag [Broken URL Removed] - Faster, more efficient and dead-simple alternative to windows updates for gamers|https://windowsmastery.com/ Disk Defragmenter. Looking at it's feature set the only drawback I can think of is lack of auto-run scheduler. Other than that, seems like an excellent program. [Note: Disk Fragmentation leads to system slowdowns, PC crashes, slow startup/shutdown and sometimes to system failures] (Nr. of downloads last week: 44,

These are the shortcuts I use every day and these are the ones you should be learning first. If you ask Microsoft for a list of essential shortcuts, they'll be handing you a list as long as your arm. Instead, do your sanity a favour and learn the ones I've given you first - then combine them with the Firefox shortcuts , then the ones for Gmail , then Google Reader , then Google Calendar . Once you've mastered that lot, you can pat yourself on the back and crown yourself Keyboard Maes

(3) CCleaner - Extensive and rather fast registry fixer + browser junk clean-up tool. Includes registry backup feature. Make sure to back up your registry before running CCleaner cleanup. (Downloads last week: 36,

(5) WinDirStat - Handy piece of software that offers an informative visual display of your hard-drive usage. Lets you quickly figure out what occupies most of your disk space (movies, documents, pics, those hidden videos :-) , etc.) Downloads last week: 11,

One of the unadvertised features of 'Send To' is that you can directly change the items that show up in the list. This is done by going to a specific folder and changing its contents. That folder is found in "Documents and Settings/yourusername." Note: replace "yourusername" with whatever your user account name is on your computer. Here's what mine looks l

While going through most popular software stats on Download.com , I decided to pull out top 10 most downloaded FREE security AND Windows optimization programs. Not surprisingly, I ended up with 10 excellent FREE programs. Check them out below, most of them seem to be really good. (Note: Program popularity was measured by the total number of downloads during the last w

Now when you first saw this tool, if you even noticed it at all, you probably thought it was pretty terrible. Most of the locations on the list, by default, are fairly useless. The only way I ever used 'Send To' in the past was to create shortcuts and put them on the Desktop. What you see above is my newly cleaned-up and customized 'Send To' m

In the folder, you will see all of the items that show up in the drop down. Most of these are actually shortcuts to those places, though a few are drives, commands to zip, or special system shortcuts to places like the Desktop or 'My Documents'. Because they're shortcuts, any other shortcuts you place in this folder will also show up in your Send To drop d

Chances are, your PC contains entirely too much personal information about you ... passwords, banking information, credit card numbers, address books, social security number, personal emails, and maybe even a few things that you wouldn't want announced on the evening n
